History

The Hampton Roads Tuskegee Alumni Club (HRTAC) is a volunteer membership organization comprised of alumni and friends of Tuskegee University. Hampton Roads Tuskegee Alumni Club Incorporated in Hampton, Virginia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

We help recruit for Tuskegee University and raise funds to support students through various events held by the Club in the Tidewater area.

We invite you to help share the Tuskegee experience and become a member of the Hampton Roads Tuskegee Alumni Club. We are accepting the $65 dues which includes local, regional, and national dues for the fiscal year. Your local dues allow the Club to host events that support our students in the Hampton Roads area. These events include college fairs, cookouts, a holiday social, and more.

Please join online below or by sending a check made payable to "Hampton Roads Tuskegee Alumni Club" to the Club address.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Eminent Associates Program

Welcome to the Hampton Roads Tuskegee Alumni Club’s 20th Founder’s Day Breakfast. As we enjoy this Legacy of Celebration, honoring the alumni from the classes of 1940 to 1969, we would be remiss if we did not revisit our history. The Club includes alumni from Chesapeake, Gloucester, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg, Virginia.

Dr. Fostine Riddick (class of 1939) chartered the Club over 34 years ago.

Presidents from then to now include:

- Dr. Fostine Riddick-Roach (class of ’39)

- Dr. Bertha Davis (class of ‘72)

- Dr. Alphonso Crenshaw Smith (class of ’61)

- Mr. Maynard Brown (class of ~’60)

- Lt. (Ret.) Col. Remus C. Rhodes, III (class of ’57)

- Dr. Willie Darby (class of ’73)

- Mrs. Brenda C. Mauney (class of ’73)

- Mrs. Tracey Young (class of ‘88)

- Veronica Meade, Esq (class of ’97)

- Mrs. Chasity Prichett (class of ’08)

The Club usually met at members’ homes and more recently at a locally owned restaurant and public libraries. In the earlier years, Club members enjoyed a cruise or two together. HRTAC hosted the Tuskegee National Alumni Association Northeastern Regional Conferences in 2005 and 2017.

Both events highlighted the accomplishments of alumni, past and present. Tuskegee University president, Dr.
Charlotte Morris provided leadership for the 67 th conference, supporting the TNAA NER’s theme “Revitalizing Tuskegee’s Future through Reclamation, Recruitment, and Rededication.” 2018 marks the 20th annual Founder’s Day scholarship breakfast. Scholarships are named for the late Mrs. Artemesia T. Carter (class of 1932) and Lt. Col. Remus C. Rhodes, III in 2015. Annual scholarship awards for tuition amount to $1,500 for incoming freshman and $500 for books for continuing students.

Over the years, the themes of this annual event reflected Founder Booker T. Washington’s focus on education and character by “Rekindling the Vision: Rebuilding the Dream” (2014). In the memorable words of the late Brenda Mauney, “we’re a small club, but we do big things.”
